About Bernie's Work at Kotani-En

Kotani-En is a classical Japanese residence in the formal style of a 13th-century estate with tile roofed walls surrounding a tea house, shrine, gardens, and ponds. Constructed for Max M. Cohn in 1918-1924 of mahogany, cedar, bamboo, and ceramic tile by master artisan Takashima and eleven craftsmen from Japan, Kotani-En represents a harmonious union of art and nature in a two-acre rustic environment. Kotani-En is a prominent example of Japanese landscape architecture in America.

The Kotani_En Japanese Garden in Los Gatos, California is a national landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 by its current owner. Today Kotani-En is privately owned and is one of the most interesting and unusual Japanese style gardens in existence. The garden is situated in a ravine and straddles a natural creek. The creek has been dammed to create a small pond that is surrounded by many rare maples, evergreens and other specimens that were originally imported from Japan.

Bernie is currently working on several projects for Kotani_En. The pictures show old and new shots of the Wishing Well, before and after shots of the well's arm and pulley, half of the front gate in the shop, and corbels for a tree bench.
